8 Months of Equipment

So, we normally travel quite light.  We can have 2 bags for the 5 of us.  But, not this time.  We have 7 bags each at just under 50 pounds.  And, we also each have a carry-on.  And, here it is all laid out.

Truly, I never thought I would ever travel with this much luggage.  Even when we went to live overseas for a year, we didn’t have any more than this.  Most of it is actually sailing equipment and school supplies.

UPDATE:  A friend had a really good question about our luggage.  We have 350 lbs of luggage and with carryons it is likely around 500 lbs.  Her question was whether or not that would weigh the boat down.  To put it in perspective, the boat is about 17 or 18 tons or about $36,000 lbs.  So, in the whole scheme of things, the extra weight is not all that much.

Holy Smokes….It’s Almost Here…

Check out the Countdown Timer [upper left].  We are so close to going.  Guess we should pack.  Just kidding, we’re done….mostly.  🙂

One thing that I thought I should do is to show you actually where we’re going and where we will be sailing.

Here’s a picture of the Caribbean to put it into perspective.

Our boat is in the British Virgin Islands and we will be sailing only in the Eastern Caribbean.  Specifically, we will be travelling from Puerto Rico to as far south as the Grenadines.  Here is a pretty good map of the area that we will be sailing.

Legend – The Renaming Ceremony

Just for something a little different.  Here is a pic (no colour enhancement) while we were renaming the boat.  You can see me in the act of appeasing the wind and weather gods.  Ahhh, the sacrifices we must make.  🙂

Santa Comes to the Pirate Family

Santa brought the boys a lot of great stuff. He even remembered to bring some sailing stuff for the boys. Here they are testing out their new gloves for the big trip.

Crew Cuts….

So the boys decided they wanted their hair short for the start of the adventure.  How short I asked?  “We want crew cuts…. kind of like Daddy.”  After asking if they were sure, this is the result.

They were able to show their haircuts to their classmates on the last couple days of school.

The Last Day of School, The First Day of School

Well, today was the “last” day of school for the boys…at least the last day of school in Perth.  The boys are excited about going on our adventure, but they sure are going to miss their friends and their teachers.  So, our goal is to stay in touch as much as we can.  Thank goodness for the technology.

Salt Water Treasures

Treasures the kids have found on previous trips to Legend.

Ready for Anything

Yes, sometimes it’s just time for a break.  Soon this will be us… less than 25 days.

[Okay, maybe it’s not always like this… but that’s okay.]

The Shirts are Ordered… It Must Be Official…

Okay, it must be official now. We’ve just ordered shirts and hats for our family with the adventure logo.

On other fronts, we continue to keep getting prepared. Lots to do but it’s coming along. As much as we travel light when we travel, packing for 8 months is going to result in lots of luggage. Most of it will be equipment that we need. Having said that, our hope is that we’ll still be under the normal requirements for luggage of 5 people. Wow.

Keep checking back as we getting closer to our launch, you will see even more over the next few weeks.

Getting Excited…

Okay, we’re down to less than 35 days and we’re getting excited.  Soon, we’ll be off on our excellent adventure.  And, alas, we still have a lot to do.  But, it is basically fun to prepare for the adventure.

To give you an idea of what the kids are getting excited to do, take a look at this short clip.

We’re going to start posting more and more as we get closer to our departure.  Please drop a line here at our blog and send us a post.  We’d love to get something other than spam robots.  🙂

A Video Tease…

Here’s a video tease…. This is the view from our tender (dinghy) while the sun is setting as we head to shore to go to dinner.  The bay is Cane Garden on Tortola in the British Virgin Islands, and we’re going to eat at Quito’s (for those of you who have visited us down there).  Enjoy.

School Starts….

The fall has arrived and school is here. And, that means that it’s time for us to get serious about our preparation for our legendary adventure.

One of the things that we need to do to prepare is to inform all the people who need to know. Highest on that list are the teachers of our 3 boys. And, now that we’ve had parent-teacher introductions, that’s happened. Woo hoo.

For my work with my company Mindscape, most people have already been told and are looking forward to hearing more as I video blog through the adventure.

So, lots to get started on and more news to follow.
